The Night Before Midterms
by Libby Ward
inspired by the poetry of Clement C. Moore and a restless night of politically-fueled anxiety
'Tis the night before midterms and all through the White House
Not a creature is stirring, except our President Louse
Our hopes are all hung on swing voters who care
In hopes that they'll vote for reps who are fair
Kids sought to immigrate, and we lost them instead
And many black innocents the cops have shot dead
And I in my PJ's and with a cat on my lap
make a restless attempt at a few hours nap
My feed is filled up with such hate-mongering chatter
It feels impossible to focus on any one matter
Tomorrow all citizens, to the polls you must dash
Vote out the xenophobes and clear out the trash
Protect rights for yourselves and the people you know
We all must turn out, "politically minded" or no
There's a ban on Muslims who some want us to fear
And, an attempt to upend the trans rights we hold dear
A balance of power should help do the trick
Of dispelling cruelty toward 'others' that makes me feel sick
This corruption seems matched (maybe) only by Nixon
That some checks put in place could help us with fixin'
Asylum seekers welcome, let's not build a wall
But a longer table that might just accommodate all
As ideologies that are wildly inhumane fly
Can we all come together? At least we must try!
We are America, a melting pot stew
It's time that we made a big change or two
Each of us has our own personal truth
Ideals we can share, Nov 6th in the booth
We'll fill in our ballots and we'll turn this around
Subpoena some answers and facts will be found
Raise up your voice and put down your foot
Elect reps who appreciate all our input
If we miss this one date we can't get it back
Remember democracy is under attack
Of voter suppression we all should be wary
Mass shootings have made our country feel scary
People harming each other have made me so low
Voters with empathy- please- all of you go
Take your friends with you, share your beliefs
Restore faith in humanity and exhale a sigh of relief
Rainbow love in our hearts and patriotic pride swelling
Our diversity shining and our vote choices telling...
Supporting each other and rights for ourselves
In great numbers our choices must be upheld
Despite any outcome we must all keep our heads
Because I have you all, I have a little less dread
But that's all to say we must continue our work
Fill Washington with kindness and kick out the jerks
More multiculturalism, fewer 'alt right' dog whistles
A big field of feminists without misogynist thistles
So I will finally exclaim, as I pass out tonight:
Please vote tomorrow and share your bright light!
