Animation: my first, and always, love.

One of the questions from an Animation Insider interview I did last year.

Where are you from and how did you get into the animation business?
Libby: I’m from Seattle, WA. I started drawing in elementary school, recreating images of Bambi, Little Foot and Hagar the Horrible. I was disqualified from winning a prize in my 5th grade science fair because the zoetrope I built (with a Lego motor) and the animation example cells I painted weren’t considered “sciencey” enough. I have a claymation slug, called Sam, who opened most of my early films by RAWING exactly like the MGM lion (a commandeered sound bite and homage). I morphed into a writer as I realized that I most loved being the weird spark that ignited a project into being.

My Life...in 3 Parragraphs

2/27/2017

Constantly updating, upgrading, rearranging...trying to squeeze my entire biography into 3 paragraphs (as I am often asked to)! Here is the latest version:

"Libby spent her burgeoning years attending St. Olaf's Catholic School in Bountiful, Utah.
Religion only made her puke twice: once in class and once during mass (she was an altar server). Little Libby spent a lot of time at parties with the deaf community- so she doesn't do a lot of yelling.

The majority of her young life was enjoyed in Seattle, in the 90s, wearing her boyfriend's jeans, her dad's flannel and listening to Nirvana, though playing jazz drums. This nerdy cheerleader graduated with honors and attended a private university that considered itself the "Harvard of the west" (Harvard does not consider itself the UPS of the east). During this time, she worked with the blind community and became much more vocal.

She moved to Italy, for fun. To Hawaii, to work as a SCUBA Dive Master. To New York, for fun. Back to Seattle, to audit
mathematics for commercial airline safety. Chicago, for fun at Second City! Now she enjoys working regularly with LA creatives: Kermit the Frog knows her name, her magic family keeps it un-real and she gets to work in the weird world of comedy and the limitless world of animation!"

A Conjurer's Legacy Lives On

2/25/2017

My magic family mourns the loss of one of our favorite bothers today. I did not have the opportunity to get to know him well, though the influence of his genius and generosity can be seen throughout the work of many (most) of my colleagues. I just saw Daryl Easton perform, days ago, at the Academy of Magical Arts clubhouse and our second home, The Magic Castle. Renown, beloved and busy, Daryl's inner demons were still too much for him and he chose to take his own life, last night, at The Magic Castle.

There is little I can do to improve the situation. I can send all my love to Daryl's family and to my magical family and Daryl's many many worldwide fans. I can remind myself and others that Daryl's incredible legacy as a person and performer will live on and grow and expand as old pros and new hands (like myself) learn and hone the skills he has perfected and shared. I can continue to be kind to everyone, everyday...All. The. Time. It is impossible to know what any one individual might be going through and kindness is such an easy thing to share.

If you need me, call on me. I'm here and I'll be here for you. I have boundless love and energy to care for and commune with my magic family, my American family, my worldwide family. We are all the same. Let's love one another.

Slow to share this because I thought I wanted to say something eloquent. But, what I really want to say is just that I freaking love animation! And, my animation family!
I have always wanted to work in animation and getting the chance to work with, hang out with and recognize my astounding group of creatively and technically nimble weirdos...at the Annie Awards each year...is just the best thing ever. 2016 was an aaaah-mazing year for animation and 2017 is going to be even better. Keep animating, All, I'm beaming with pride over the amazing work we do as a community and I love you all! XO
