My love of jazz cannot be easily explained. My family does not listen to jazz (except when I'm playing it); there aren't even a lot of musicians in my family. As far as I recall, I did not hear jazz at all until 7th grade when I joined the jazz band, because I'm a passionate musician (percussion primarily) who wants to play all. the. time.
When I finally got a taste of jazz, it would be a gross understatement to say that I was hooked. Sometimes it takes you a while to discover something, and when you do it's like you're back. You've always belonged to it, you just didn't know it.
Maybe it's instinct, maybe it's genetic, maybe it's past lives...
at any rate: I've always belonged to jazz.
My devotion means I would get up at 5:07 every morning from 7th to 12th grade to get to 6:30am rehearsal (I am NOT -like most jazz musicians- a morning person). I have traveled great distances and sneakily infiltrated clubs and venues- without tickets or the requisite 21+ ID - and I've loved every minute. I had the incredibly good fortune to meet many many jazz greats before they passed on to the great jam session in the sky. And, when my time comes, I hope to join them. Guess I'd better practice!
