Occasionally I like to sit at the Owl Bar (my favorite bar at the Magic Castle) and use a Sharpie to ruin/improve some playing cards. The owl bar features the Larsen family's vast owl collection. There are two, among the roughly 100, that always stand apart for me: a partially broken one, of a pair of bookends (for its curious and gorgous imperfection), and this one: Hidey Owl.
I hand't considered, until just now, why I like Hidey Owl so much. I think it's the juxtaposition: a mysterious, nocturnal predator who is also just a little bit shy. The best characters have these kinds of tension-creating flaws...you, me, Hidey Owl. I think this owl is just a happy reminder that there is beauty in our vulnerability.
